Vestfold: A Jewel of A County
By happenstance I came to spend a lot of time in the region over the past few years. Here is a mixed selection of some of my captures.
Vestfold County is situated between counties Telemark and Buskerud. It’s little more than 50km south-west from Oslo and forms the western shore of the outer Oslo fjord. The administrative center is Tønsberg which is, together with with Sandefjord and Horten the major (small) cities. A rich history of shipping and sailing with the former whaling capital of Norway in Sandefjord, and the primary naval base of the country in Horten indicates the importance of the sea. However, the gently sloping lowlands of the county makes it one of the most productive agricultural districts in the country.
Tønsberg is the oldest city in Norway and was once the seat of the viking kings, but there are many traces of human activity in the region. The many burial mounds of Borre, predating the viking era proves that this must have been a rich, fertile and populated region for a very long time.
