HLF: An Unusual Organization
Volunteer work plays a huge part in my life. For years I have been active in HLF – Hørselshemmedes Landsforbund, or in plain English – “The Norwegian Association For the Hard of Hearing”. It’s the largest national organization within its field in the world! We now have more than 60 000 members in Norway.
There are very valid reasons for both the size and existence. Hearing loss, tinnitus and other conditions connected to hearing is rapidly becoming the great public health issue of our time. The numbers are brutal. Around 15 % of the population in the western world suffer from some kind of hearing issue and it increases. Modern lifestyle with exposure to noise wreak havoc on our ears. There are millions and millions of people in need of help as well as a huge potential for preventive measures.
I currently hold a position as chairperson of a committee in the national organization. That gives me access to some of the inner life of such a huge organization and of course, as always, I do make images.
